Can I run a 3 volt DC motor on a 9.6 volt battery pack? - building a small motor for a toy

I'm going a little toy boat, basically, from scratch, wondering if the battery is 9.6 V DC motor used to power 3 volts may be damaged. The engine seems to be too hot or sound bad when it is running. Will it hurt the engine of everything, even if it does not work for very long periods of time? Thank you in advance for all customs!
